AI Chat

The AI assistant lives in a panel beside the article you are editing, opened from the editor's own AI button. It needs an AI service to be configured first — see AI Services — and the AI assistant switch turned on.

Asking a question

Type into the message box and press Send, or use Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on a Mac keyboard). Grafida sends your message together with the article's title and its current body, so you can ask about structure, pacing, tone, accuracy, or anything else about the piece you are writing without having to paste it in yourself.

AI Tools opens the same menu as the editor's tool button — see AI Tools — with Custom… at the bottom for a free-form question rather than one of the ready-made prompts. If you have already typed a message, tapping a tool sends that message under the tool's instructions; tapping a tool with nothing typed sends the tool's own name instead, which is enough for a tool like Generate or Summarise to act on.

Note

A free-form question goes to the model under a different set of instructions than the five bundled tools use — one written for answering questions rather than rewriting the article. Even an edited system prompt (see AI Tools) does not apply to a free-form question, for the same reason: that edit is written to steer a rewrite, and applying it here has produced a model that rewrote the article when it was only asked to comment on it.

Stop cancels a reply while it is being generated.

The thought process

Some models show their reasoning before they answer. Where one does, Grafida shows it under a collapsible Thought process heading, so you can see how the model got to its answer without it crowding out the answer itself. It is shown for your own reassurance only: it is never sent back to the model on your next message, never saved with the conversation, and never copied by any of the copy actions below.

Using a reply

Once a reply has finished, three actions appear beneath it:

  • Insert into editor — puts the reply into the article at the caret.
  • Copy — copies the reply to the clipboard as rich text, ready to paste somewhere that accepts formatting.
  • Copy raw — copies exactly what the model sent, with none of Grafida's own formatting applied.

Insert and Copy both use Grafida's rendered version of the reply; Copy raw is the only one of the three that gives you the model's own output unchanged.

Saving a conversation

Save stores the whole conversation so you can come back to it later. Your article needs to have been saved at least once first, since a saved conversation is attached to it. Leave the title blank to have Grafida use the start of your first message; type your own to use that instead.

AI Chats lists what you have saved for this article, opens one back into the panel, and offers Delete for one you no longer want.

New Chat clears the panel without deleting anything you have already saved.

What reopening a saved conversation does and does not do

Some providers can keep their own copy of a conversation so that a follow-up message does not need to resend everything that came before it. A conversation you are actively working in can use that where the service is set up for it — see Store the conversation on AI Services.

That link is broken once you close and reopen a saved conversation. Reopening one starts it fresh from Grafida's own record of what was said, with no link back to the provider's own copy — a provider's stored conversation is not something you are meant to keep coming back to indefinitely, and Grafida does not assume it is still there. A further message in a reopened conversation is sent together with the article as it is now, not as it was when the conversation was first saved, so if the article has changed a great deal in between, it is worth saying so in your next message rather than assuming the model remembers what changed.
