Media

The Media Manager screen has two tabs, Local media and Site media, and works on the site you set as active on the Sites screen.

Local media

Every picture Grafida is holding on this machine for that site, in one flat grid. There are no folders here.

Each tile shows the picture, its file name, its dimensions and size, and a Published mark once it has been uploaded to the site. Under each tile:

  • Rename changes the file name Grafida will upload it under.
  • Replace swaps the picture's bytes for another file you choose, keeping the same entry. Every local article that used the picture is updated to show the new one, including articles you do not have open.
  • Edit image opens Grafida's own image editor — see Editing a picture below.
  • Delete removes it. Grafida asks first, and names any local articles still using it.
  • About this path says where the picture is, or is expected to be, on your site.

Choose file… at the top adds a picture from the file picker your system provides.

Important

About this path tells you two different things and the difference matters. For a picture that has already been uploaded, it reports the path the site actually gave it. For one that has not, it reports a prediction — the final folder and file name are decided by your site at the moment of upload, so the real path may differ. Do not copy a predicted path anywhere that needs to be right.

Pictures reach an article from the editor's own image button, from the Intro image and Full article image controls in the Inspector, and from any picture custom field. All of them open the same picker, which shows the same two tabs as this screen.

Site media

Your site's own Media Manager, browsed live. Press a folder to open it, and Up to leave it; the current folder's path is shown beside them. Each picture's tile shows the path it has on the site. Where Grafida can edit the picture, an Edit image button appears here too — see Editing a picture below, and read its warning before you use it on this tab.

Note

This tab is browse-only. Grafida does not upload to, rename in, delete from or create folders in your site's Media Manager from this screen. The only thing it ever uploads is the pictures an article needs, at the moment you publish it — see Publishing.

If the site cannot be reached, this tab says so and offers to try again. Local media keeps working meanwhile.

Editing a picture

Edit image, on a picture's tile, opens Grafida's own image editor — on both the Local media and the Site media tab.

  • Rotate left and Rotate right turn the picture a quarter turn.
  • Flip horizontal and Flip vertical mirror it.
  • Crop is a mode rather than a one-shot action: choose it, drag a rectangle over the picture, then confirm with Apply crop. Choosing Crop again cancels it without applying anything.
  • Resize gives you width and height boxes and an aspect-ratio menu — Free, Original, 1:1, 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9 — which keeps the two boxes in that proportion for you whenever it is set to anything but Free.

Undo and Reset cost nothing: every change is applied to the original picture, never to the last preview, so rotating a picture you have already resized does not soften it the way repeated edits normally would. What you see on screen while you work is a preview scaled down to fit; the picture is saved at its full size.

Edit image only appears for a picture Grafida can save back in the same file format on the system it is running on — which formats those are depends on the machine, so a picture that offers no Edit image button here may offer one elsewhere. Where it cannot, the button is simply absent rather than disabled. Editing never changes a picture's name or its format.

Warning

Editing a picture on the Site media tab changes the file on your live website the moment you confirm it. Grafida asks first, but once you agree there is no undo and no previous version is kept — and every article or template already using that file gets the new picture too. Editing a picture on the Local media tab only changes the copy on this machine; the site sees it at your next publish.

Where uploads go

Two settings on the site's own form decide where a published article's pictures land:

  • Media filesystem — which of the site's Media Manager filesystems to use. Automatic asks the site which ones it has and takes its usual one.
  • Media upload folder — a folder inside that filesystem, created if it is not there. Left blank, it is grafida.

Grafida never asks the site to overwrite a file that is already there. What happens to a name that is already taken is your site's own decision.

Formats

Grafida stores and uploads a picture exactly as you gave it to it, at whatever size it already is: adding a picture never converts or resizes it. A picture too large for your site stays that size until you do something about it — Edit image can resize it for you, or Replace is the way to swap in a version you prepared elsewhere.
